Welcome To Our Museum

The Windsor Court Hotel is known for its superb art collection of museum quality assembled for our guest's pleasure and edification. Among the prominent artists represented are Gainsborough, Reynolds, Van Dyck, Huysman and de Largilliere. Most of the collection is of British origin and the emphasis is on Windsor Castle and the life of the Royal Family.

Here is a sampling of our extensive collection:

When a guest at the hotel, His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent presented a gift from his private collection: a portrait of his great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra, when she was Princess of Wales. The portrait of the beautiful wife of Edward VII, graces the lobby.

Sir Anthony Van Dyck painted Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I, before she fled to Holland in 1642 and her husband was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell. The portrait hangs on the second floor in the Palm Court.

A stunning view of lavish court life adorns the lobby wall behind the concierge desk. "King Charles II's Last Sunday," originally housed at the Royal Academy of London, depicts the king and his retinue unaware of imminent tragedy. Six days later he was dead, and his brother became king.

Twenty-five hand-finished chromolithographs of Windsor Castle's private and State apartments by Sir Joseph Nash. They were commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848 to present to foreign dignitaries as a souvenir of their stay at Windsor Castle.

Several depictions of Windsor Castle through the years have been collected, including a fine 1885 painting by W.R. Stone, an 18th century view of Windsor Castle by Peter Tillemans and "Windsor Castle from the Thames" painted by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788).

The focal points of the handsome domed Board Room are a magnificent 17th century Brussells tapestry and a 17th century oil by Jacob Huysman portraying "A Noblewoman with Her Three Children."

In the lobby, a young Victoria is shown riding her horse in a bronze sculpture by Thomas Thornycroft, a smaller version of a life size piece shown at the Great Trade Exhibition in London in the 1800s.

An exquisite portrait of the Prince of Wales (Prince James) and his sister (Princess Louisa) as young children hangs in the lobby. The artist Nicolas de Largilliere (1656-1746) was a Parisian and the director of the Academy.

Also in the lobby hangs an early 20th century portrait of King George V and Queen Mary, no longer Saxe-Coburg-Gotha but Windsor in name. The parents of Edward VIII (later Prince of Wales) and George VI are wearing full royal regalia.

A fine portrait of Edward, Prince of Wales, wearing the uniform of the Welsh guards can be found in the second floor public area, along with a needlepoint tapestry worked by the King who gave up his throne.

In the North Penthouse hangs an impressionistic painting of his mother, Queen Mary, leaving Sandringham on the 26th of August, 1936, three months before his abdication. An autographed photo of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor is located in the Polo Club Lounge.

Many other outstanding works of art await your pleasure. We invite you to enjoy a complimentary guided tour of our $8 million collection of art, antiques and memorabilia each Saturday afternoon at 4pm. Come, be our guest.
